When my daughter was in elementary school, they had a “crazy hat day” and together we made a unicorn hat for her with a 3D-printed light-up horn based on this Adafruit project. It was a big hit at school, and it was a similarly big hit when she wore it to a Maker Faire later that year. Since then, it’s been sitting for years on a shelf, and I thought it would be awesome to take that project, adapt it into a hard hat, and maybe make an upgrade or two.
I did it, I recorded it… and here it is:
Recording my projects is extremely unnatural. I like to just jump into my workshop when I have a moment and move quickly. Remembering to record, waiting for a camera battery to charge, and narrating breaks that flow—even though I do enjoy the narration part! I’m glad I did it, though, and the video turned out well. Maybe there are more of these build videos in my future.
As many of you are aware, I’m a member of the Hard Hat Brigade, and we had a great DEFCON this year… but… we did need some additional example hard hats. This Unicorn Hard Hat will be one of those new example projects, so look out for it, and maybe—just maybe—it might get worn around a few times.
